Uni: 3D Composition by Risachantag Uni: 3D Composition by Risachantag
(Well, you guys asked for it ^_<;) Witness my n00b 3D modeling skills! This is our first assignment for our 3D modelling class. We were asked to take photos of some reasonably simple objects to model and render in black and white using Maya. Apologies for the lack of textures, I'm still very new to Maya. Hopefully the next project will be more interesting. ^^;

As your first modeling assignment, this is pretty freaking sweet. My first modeling assignment was an apple T_T; Good job on the intricate lace design on the fan. Did you do this with polys or NURBS?

Thanks! The idea was that we would try out working with both polygons and nurbs, so the fan is made with polygons and the cup and pen are nurbs.

Absolutely amazing. I love the shadows on it. May I use this image as a base for one of my avatars? I, of course, will credit you.

I have such a wonderful idea... :devilish:

brilliant! did u use the 3 basic light principles? (loves the shadows) kicker, key and filler?

maya is the MOST complicated program i've ever tried. 3d max seemed simpler compared to this. so to pull that off and being a newbie to it, i give u salutations! :salute:

Yup, that's what I started off with, anyway. I just played around with the lighting until I got the effect I was looking for.

Maya rules. Which version are you guys running on? 6.5.1? You got to try to get 7 if you can. They made it so you can pick walk on polygons the same as you do on nerbs. They also did a complete body IK solver and made it so you can paint different colored weights on the fly. God rigging will be so easy for you guy just comming into the programs...

...now on to your work. My boyfriend "Renezuo" pointed it out to me and I'm really digging your style with the lighting. You have good balance and sense of composition. The only thing I'd have you look at is your three point lighting set up unless you used raytrace. I'm not totally sure from just looking at it...

Either way take a look a real shadow sometime and notice that right next to the object..where it's touching the serface you get what's called bounce. You can use a negitive light to make the area darker and still have the rim or kicker shadow you need for the bounce...you'll have not only some of the color from the table it's on bouncing back along with the light. I just finished a lighting class and I'm about a year from graduation. Still for first project...wow. Koodos to you.

Nice to see more people in the feild who actually draw.

Thanks for the advice! We haven't gone into raytracing yet (we were asked to just use depth map shadows for this), but hopefully for the next project we'll get to use it. The shadows were the one thing that I thought didn't look right (also the fan's shadow, where the fan is semi-transparent the shadow is opaque). Lots to learn...

always. These days computers are fast enough ray traceing doesn't kill your render time but it usually is more costly long run than seeting up a lighting rig and bakeing it. ::being a geek and blabbing.:: you'll probably be learning things I've never heard of before comming into it so close to maya 7's release. I look forward to looking at more of your work. I really should post my stuff somewhere but I never thing they are worth much ::sheepish::

Ahhh you just gained around 100 respect points (takes the tally up entirely too high now...)

3d is evil. PUUUUURE evil. Though I have never used Maya... the forced 3dsmax onto us. So not fun :P But, this one turned out nicely. Love the small detailing on the fans handle/woody part :P

urgh Maya. I was going to be doing a animation course that only used Maya, but it was about 16,000 for a year... that was SAE College in the city. But still, most animation studios and what not don't hire people if they have no experience with 2D. So I am just going with my Animation Diploma o_o. I think they only use 3D max though =[.

Very nice detail, considering that you call yourself a "n00b" (God I hate that word >_<;).
