This is the gate of the 'floating temple' in Miyajima/Itsukushima ([link]). It was one of the places I really wanted to visit in this trip to Japan, as it was the inspiration for one of my entries in DA's Okami competition: Floating Temple

Unfortunately, by the time we arrived the sun had already set, so I have very few decent photos. It was a really beautiful place though. We arrived on a night with a full moon, so we were lucky enough to catch the beginning of a festival.

They represent a passing between the normal world and the spiritual world in the Shinto religion. You often see them at the entrance to a shrine or temple in Japan. With this one, they have a ceremony where a small boat passes through it at high tide.

A beautiful shot. :+fav:

I had the pleasure of seeing this gate in person a couple years ago.

oh Miyajima is absolutely superbe! I think it has to be the most beautiful place i have ever been too. I love it there! I've just come back from Japan and this photo makes me sad!!!

but it is beautiful <3 unfortunately i went to Itsukushima shrine in the morning when it was low tide, so i didnt see the floating effect, but it did not diminish the sheer beauty of the place <3
