Photo: Floating Temple Gate by Risachantag Photo: Floating Temple Gate by Risachantag
This is the gate of the 'floating temple' in Miyajima/Itsukushima ([link]). It was one of the places I really wanted to visit in this trip to Japan, as it was the inspiration for one of my entries in DA's Okami competition: Floating Temple

Unfortunately, by the time we arrived the sun had already set, so I have very few decent photos. It was a really beautiful place though. We arrived on a night with a full moon, so we were lucky enough to catch the beginning of a festival.

what is the purpose of these things if you dont mind me asking.
Risachantag Featured By Owner Mar 2, 2012  Professional Digital Artist
They represent a passing between the normal world and the spiritual world in the Shinto religion. You often see them at the entrance to a shrine or temple in Japan. With this one, they have a ceremony where a small boat passes through it at high tide.

oh Miyajima is absolutely superbe! I think it has to be the most beautiful place i have ever been too. I love it there! I've just come back from Japan and this photo makes me sad!!!

but it is beautiful <3 unfortunately i went to Itsukushima shrine in the morning when it was low tide, so i didnt see the floating effect, but it did not diminish the sheer beauty of the place <3

Yay! Miyajima-desu! I went there once. Because the torii is out in the water, the whole island is considered sacred. I remember hearing somewhere that no one is allowed to give birth or die on the island. If that's true (which it may not be), how exactly would one go about stopping it? Something to ponder.

Did you get eaten by the deer like I did?

Fantastic photograph, love sunsets :D

Lol, at least you were there when the tide was in and the sun was out! When I went, it was rainy, so no pretty sun. And the tide was out, so no "floating" going on. But there was a wedding happening! Beautiful kimonos on people! :XD:

Where else did you go while there? :D

Something about that place is just amazing. It's a pretty simple structure if you think about it, but it hold so much unexplainable beauty. I've always loved it, though I haven't been there to see it first hand yet.
