I had about 10-20 at any given time, and would merge those as I went. I did this one rather like a normal painting though, just painting on top of the last layer as I went so I could undo things by deleting layers if I wanted to.

that's very good to know. I see lots of artists on your scale of profession who "need" more than 200 layers to do something like this...that just blows my mind. I would never even begin to know how to keep track of them...I mean, there are only so many sorting colors on the layers
