Freedom Fall: First screenshots by Risachantag Freedom Fall: First screenshots by Risachantag
The last few days have been wonderful! Not only did I get to start work on the trailer, but there's been a flurry of activity, with programming updates and the first theme music concept coming through.

There's still another polish pass to do on the art, with particle effects just starting to go into the game, but I'm happy with the way the look and feel of the game is coming together.

Hi Don-Odachi, I'm glad you're looking forward to it! The initial release will be in English only, then localisation will depend on whether it's cost-effective to do so. I very much hope there will be releases in other languages and areas in the future.

So this one is actually in production? I do hope this one does not head in the same direction as the previous projects you've been involved in. (:

I just realised that sounded ambiguous, I meant I'm sure it shall be released. We're about 50% of the way through production at the moment.

I wouldn't think you would say you're certain that it's doomed to failure. (: That's great news, both the release of the last project and the progress on your current one. I didn't even know it's your own initiative - I may have missed that journal.

In hindsight, I suppose what you've seen is characteristic of many smaller companies. My current job is for a large company and all the development is in-house, whereas my previous job was for a very small company - basically, it was just myself and my boss! It was research and development work, so while we did have a couple of big projects where the client was willing to see things through to completion (at least of a working prototype), I do remember a few other projects that started, then withered and died because the clients' expectations were too high for what they were willing to invest. (After all, the nature of R&D work is that the results you want aren't necessarily guaranteed.)

Anyway, I didn't mean to talk about myself - the point is that sometimes you score a win on a project, sometimes you don't. Good to hear about some wins coming from your direction. (:

I have to say, my experience at the smaller company sounds similar to yours. We started work on around six small to medium scale games, of which only two were completed and released. It seems like a real shame looking back on it, particularly since for some of them the art was completed while the programming wasn't. Ah well, dealing with games being cancelled is part of the job in my experience, you've just got to get back on your feet and face the next challenge. =)

Ah! It is a shame when something is cancelled, isn't it? Certainly, when one hears of large projects being cancelled, it can be disappointing to the potential buyer, but I can imagine there are untold smaller releases that get the cut as well.

Though the way you put it - art and programming development - reminds me that the two skills complement each very well. At least, for me, I feel fairly comfortable with technical aspects, but I can't say I'm very good at the creative side of things!

Obviously, you're involved with paid work at the moment, but I wonder if you've ever been involved with fan or community projects? Not necessarily game-related, but those are the ones I'm most familiar with. Sometimes, I've seen projects focus too much on either the artistic/creative elements and neglect the technical work, or vice versa. Or maybe, the talent and resources just aren't there to balance things out. Just a thought - I've also seen completed projects that work out terrifically. Paid work, or for free, seeing a project come to fruition is undoubtedly rewarding for both the creators and the consumers.

Wow, I didn't mean to write so much again. Sorry about that, but thanks for taking the time to reply. (:

I'm sure it shall be. As Freedom Fall started as my own project, I'm dedicate to seeing this game through to release.

To be fair, the large project I worked on at my last workplace was released a few months ago, so it's not all bad news! ([link]) It's an education game for young kids.

This looks awesome! For a second I though you just wrote those words in photoshop onto a screenshot of the game, but then I realized it was a part of the game and was just written on the walls lol. I don't know if it's meant to be like that, but I think having the words set to overlay would make it look more apart of the game background...Unless the art director/director (you?) wants it like that lol. Anyways, this is really looking cool! I'd like to try it when it's out =)

Thanks, I'm responsible for the art, level building and story, and I'm working with Stirfire Studios ([link]) who are providing programming, production, marketing etc. There's two of us working full time, with another five in part time or contract roles, so it's a decent sized team. =)

Do you guys have a page on indiedb yet? That also lends itself well to post development updates and reaches an audience that is very into the modding and indie game scene.
