Fanart: Doctor Horrible by Risachantag Fanart: Doctor Horrible by Risachantag
I've been doing rather a lot of portrait practise the last few months, and as you can probably see, still lots to learn. But I feel I'm getting a little better as I go.

I challenged myself to try a person people would be able to recognise, and since when I started this, I'd been listening to the Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog's soundtrack waaay too much, Doctor Horrible it was. (Those songs are so ridiculously catchy~)

Tools: Photoshop CS3 & Wacom Intuos Tablet

Edit: Made some adjustments to his left arm.

Okay, I'm going to go through each of the categories one by one.

Vision: Ah, Dr. Horrible. I love how you've put in the dank, dark room that we could all really see him working in, not to mention the "no hammers" sign. I also like that you put him in the red suit. So many people like to put him in the white suit that we see him in throughout the show.

The only thing that bothers me is how he's smiling. By this point, I'd expect either a forced or insane smile, or a sad/resigned expression. I'm going to give you four stars here.

Originality: I have to admit, I haven't seen that many color portraits of Dr. Horrible. Of course, I'm not a big part of the fandom, so that might be it, but because I haven't seen many well done portraits, I'll give you five stars here.

Technique: Definite five stars! I'd give you 6 if I could...or 10. I love the color, I love his skin tones, I love how you painted the lab coat, the bricks, the glasses, the color...I can't get over how well done this is! He may not look photo-realistic, but I like that about it. What's the point of drawing photo-realism except for practice (in my opinion). All in all, I absolutely love your technique.

Impact: I'm going back to the smile here. I can see a little insanity in there, but it really reminded me of the character before the third act, not after. I think that detracts from the impact a little. Otherwise, I think you did a fabulous job. Four and a half stars here.

I remember the first time I watched Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog I was effortless whisked to the edge of my seat upon the reveal of the surprise third act and was not sure if it was time to laugh or cry. By the time Dr. Horrible revealed his new ensemble (pun not intended) I realized it was time for neither. I was simply supposed to be in awe.

When I saw this image it immediately brought me back to that time and I felt the same cold chill I did when I first watched the internet epic.

This picture is a brilliant use of colors and a fantastic portrait of one of my favorite characters of all time. The villainous smirk added is almost too perfect for me to overlook.

By far the best detail in this picture is the hair and left (his right) glove. The coloring is great and coincides with that eerily mucky background you have in the green. It's a great touch and really helps for the red doctor's suit to pop.

The face, goggles, and remaining glove are also good by not as fetching as the left glove and hair. If I were asked to explain further I would have to say it is probably because, seeing as how they are metal, I would expect the goggles to be a bit harsher in tones and perhaps a bit more shiny? As for the other glove, I can't say there is so much something wrong with it as it was something I more or less looked for as opposed to the detail coming at me. The face is excellent as far as expression is concerned and I really get a feel for Billy's changed character here, but there was not as much green lighting/shadowing on his face as there was say on the clothes or gloves.

The only real "negative" I see would be in the lab coat. The coloring on it is fantastic but I don't really get a sense of what the fabric is like I do on the gloves or in the texture of his hair. To be perfectly honest this is simple nitpicking and I'm no expert by a long shot, still I'm hoping that this may help.

Overall, this is a MORE than fantastic picture ad I'm giddy as a school girl to respectfully add it to my favorites.

Excellent work I usually dislike fanart because it's usually poorly drawn (not that I'm one to judge), but I love this and more importantly I love NPH<3<3<3
