Codex Astra: Mothership by Risachantag Codex Astra: Mothership by Risachantag
Today's a rather sad day for me. Due to a major contract ending, my workplace, Different Methods ([link])) closed down.

It's been a wonderful place to work, with friendly co-workers and lots of talent and enthusiasm. Working there as the lead artist allowed me to grow and learn new skills outside of concept art, such as world building, modelling and user interfaces. Most of all, I think I'll miss my workmates and my boss's terrible jokes.

The main project I worked on there is being continued by another studio, and will be released in June ([link]). There's still hope that a couple of the smaller games made with Different Methods will be released in the coming months too, so I'll be sure to post about those.

This picture is an early concept for Codex Astra, and was the background on my computer at work, so it seems fitting to post it. [link]

As for my plans, for the time being I'll have plenty of free time to work on Freedom Fall, and may open for commissions later in the month!

That's a shame. I hope you can find a new studio to work with soon.

I'm sorry to hear about your work; it is always difficult when things like that happen. You are so talented though; you'll be scooped up right away. In the meantime, enjoy your free time. Take care.

Another job loss! After reading about the other one, it feels all too soon to have this one too. Well, at least you had warning this time around, as you say.

Very nice spacecraft designs - it's not what you usually work on, is it? I thought they were fighters, but then the title implies that at least one of them is a very large ship. It's hard to get a sense of scale, I suppose. I thought the light blue circles on the side of the background ship was supposed to be a human-head sized window, but I'm guessing the streaks of white lines are really supposed to represent windows instead. Perhaps if the blue ship was fainter, perhaps the details blurred a bit, not so distinct, then maybe it would be more obviously further away (which implies greater size). Although, now I'm noticing the asteroids actually come in between the blue ship and the red fighter-sized craft.

The Interzone one was three years ago now, I ended up searching through old images from it because my more recent job was coming to a close. One of my workmates who has been in the industry for some time said he'd never worked in any one place for longer than two years, so I guess in some ways that's the nature of game design in Australia. =(

Thanks for the critique!

Ah, yes, I remember you saying the pictures are from a while ago. I only felt it was a surprise to learn of another loss back-to-back, even if they were a few years apart. Well, I know games development is very difficult if you're a small company - I know of friends both in Australia and in Europe who have struggled in burgeoning game studios. :/

No worries, I try to offer something more constructive than a quick 'looks good!' remark. (: Hope it'll help for your future work.

): Sorry about your job - have you got another one lined up already? Was it a shock, or did you all know it was coming?
I really hope you can find one with the same ideal work environment and amazing job description.

As for this picture - it's lovely. I think I love the stardust.
